Soboras Church, a landmark of Kaunas, Lithuania, is revealed through a restrained, two-layer lighting composition that respects its architecture and urban context. A soft, uniform wash defines the monumental volume, while precisely aimed accents reveal columns, arches and ornamental details. Luminaires are concealed or fitted with anti-glare and anti-spill accessories, allowing the architecture—not the equipment—to remain visible. Lower luminance at pedestrian level ensures visual comfort in the surrounding square, while brighter upper sections reinforce the church’s presence in distant city views. Obsolete metal-halide and sodium fixtures were replaced with efficient, serviceable LED luminaires with replaceable light sources, extending system life and reducing waste. DALI control, integrated into Kaunas’ smart lighting network, enables timed scenes and late-night dimming, reducing energy use and light pollution while preserving the landmark’s identity after dark.
