The Beholder uses 1200 flora samples gathered by hand, cast in resin and lit via fibre-optics as a suspended light sculpture. The artwork is about looking, studying, observing and ascribing value to an object through this act. We all observe nature on every scale; from microscopic details to the stars themselves. Each of these plant samples can be seen the same way, in great detail using the natural optics of the bulb shape to examine each sample in great detail, to the entire canopy as a nebulous galaxy of texture. The intention is to make people aware of the act of looking, and rediscovering the world around them – especially the everyday.
